VO₂ Max Testing for Hypertension

Professional VO₂ max testing for hypertension (high blood pressure). Safe exercise intensity guidance for blood pressure management and cardiovascular health.

Exercise is first-line treatment for hypertension:

  • Regular aerobic exercise lowers blood pressure
  • VO₂ max testing establishes safe exercise intensity
  • Know training zones for BP management
  • Avoid excessive intensity that spikes BP

Controlled hypertension (Stage 1-2): Generally safe for testing with physician clearance

Severe uncontrolled hypertension: Not appropriate for maximal testing until controlled

We monitor BP throughout testing:

  • Pre-test resting BP measurement
  • Continuous monitoring during test
  • Stop if BP rises to unsafe levels
  • Post-test BP recovery monitoring

VO₂ max testing guides BP-lowering exercise:

  • Zone 1-2: Best for BP management (moderate intensity)
  • Zone 3: Acceptable for controlled hypertension
  • Zone 4-5: Use cautiously, shorter intervals
  • Avoid breath-holding or excessive straining

BP medications affect testing:

  • Beta-blockers: Lower maximum heart rate
  • ACE inhibitors/ARBs: Minimal effect on testing
  • Diuretics: Ensure proper hydration
  • Take medications as prescribed on test day
